Shutter types FAQ
Which shutter type is best?
Accordion shutters are a strong value for windows and patio doors; roll-downs deploy at the push of a button; storm panels are the lowest-cost option for occasional use; Bahama and colonial shutters add shade and curb appeal. Many homes mix types by opening.
How fast can accordion shutters be closed?
Accordion shutters stay mounted beside the opening; you slide them closed and lock them, usually from inside or at ground level for first-floor windows.
Manual or motorized roll-downs?
Manual crank roll-downs cost less; motorized units close with a switch or remote — the easiest choice for large openings and second floors.
Are Bahama shutters real storm protection?
Bahama and colonial shutters can be rated for storms when the product is evaluated for windborne debris; they also give everyday shade.
Do shutters need to be tested products?
Yes — choose shutters that are evaluated for windborne debris. TDI keeps product evaluation listings for shutters that inspectors use (TDI).
